Auto-wifi is a simple app that fulfills a simple need. It periodically looks for nearby wifi connections turning on and disabling wifi for a brief moment, thus allowing us to detect them without need of having to check it out by yourself.
Users usually keep their wifi settings on so the device checks out if there's an open wifi near. However, this drinks too much battery. Thanks to this app we can set every how much time it checks it out, keeping wifi searching out the rest of the time. It's a little bit tricky, but it might well be what you were looking for. Otherwise, you already know what to do: disconnect your wifi when you leave a hotspot and make use of your data plan till you land on another safe house.

This App switches off wi-fi automatically when there is no connection (saving battery and increasing standby time) checks for available connection after specified interval.
