Make good use of Google's Voice Synthesizer and let it read to you

    • Useful
    • Works well
    • Difficult to find
    • Not available for most apps

"The voice that talks to me..."

Google's Voice Synthesizer is one of the features of Android devices which could end up being a great help for some users. Basically, what this feature does is read the text which appears on your screen aloud; providing that the app in question has the appropriate support from Google (for example, Google Books or TalkBack for people with disabilities).

It's a really useful option, especially if you don't want to strain your eyes, or if you are in a foreign country (it also works with Google Translate). Just tap and forget about reading the screen.

It's a bit of a hidden option, and most people don't even know it exists. The pronunciation isn't the best either, but it's good enough in general, and makes most content more accessible. It's a shame that it's still not available for most apps.

Google text to speech powers applications to read the text on your screen aloud. For example, it can be used by:
    • Google Play Books to 'Read Aloud' your favourite book
    • Google Translate to speak translations aloud so that you can hear the pronunciation of a word
    • TalkBack and accessibility applications for spoken feedback across your device
    • … and many other applications in Play Store

To use Google text to speech on your Android device, go to Settings > Language & Input > Text to speech output. Select Google text to speech Engine as your preferred engine.
