The H.E.L.P.S. Veterans application was designed to quickly and intuitively assist caregivers in finding local resources for homeless veterans. Care has been taken to remove any impediments to usability and to that end the home screen is a minimal and intuitive interface designed to take the user to the specific resource(s) needed without requiring complex navigation; buttons are displayed to indicate the different resources available:
Find a Bed locates shelter resources with the option to sort by number of beds available or distance from current location, utilizing the mobile phone’s built-in geolocation. Tapping a given location will show additional details for the shelter such as address, phone number, contact name, total number of beds available, and open beds available. From there, tapping the address will show the location on an interactive map, providing the option to zoom out to reveal additional resources at their respective locations in the vicinity.
Find Jobs utilizes the National Resource Directory’s job search for employers trying to fill positions with veterans. Search options provided use M.O.S./M.O.C. (Military Occupation Specialty/Classification), keyword, or location to bring back a list of available opportunities showing job title and a short description. Tapping the individual job opportunity will bring up more information including a link to view the actual listing in the phone’s web browser.
Find Legal pulls up a list of local VA accredited attorneys specializing in claims for VA benefits, sorted by zip code. Tapping the attorney’s name brings up information about the attorney or firm, including the phone number and gives the option to call or perform a search for the attorney in the phone’s web browser.
Find Medical will give the user two options, both of which perform similarly. Medical Services and Mental Health services will take the user to lists of Hospitals, Clinics, HHS services, etc. or mental health facilities, respectively. The application lists facilities by name, and tapping an individual entry will display more information including the phone number and address, and where available, the treatment type. The details screen gives the option of locating the facility on the map (by tapping the address), calling the facility or returning to the home screen.
Crisis Hotlines pulls up a screen with links to four different web sites providing resources for Veteran support and the option to dial two main Veteran’s Crisis hotlines.
Help provides information on using the application as well as contact options to report bugs or inaccurate information.
