For us Burning Man 2012 attendees: a completely OFFLINE map of Black Rock City--including GPS--a list of all registered camps (and their descriptions), and event info too.
The GPS+map alone is super useful! I used it myself last year and it came in even more handy than I thought it would, especially at night when street signs are not lit and you're not terribly sober. Black Rock City is so vast.
I realize there are a lot of features that would make this app even more useful. I am going to try to hit the biggest ones over the weekend, but please understand I have already lost a lot of sleep trying to get this out in time as it is. (I would like to personally thank Samsung for putting out devices that have NO MENU BUTTON making it a major pain in the ass to provide menu UI on the screen that plays nicely with everything else that is there and cluttering it up for everyone else -- those with a menu button can use it though to show/hide the buttons, yay).
Please let me know what feature you want to see most!! So far on my to-do / dream list is:
- Add Burning Man Art Info section
- Make camps/events/art searchable
- Add support for favoriting camps/events/art
As for "adding camp locations", apparently the Burning Man organizers purposely WANT you to not have this info; they WANT it to be impossible to prepare and plan accordingly, as they do not release it until you arrive at the gates. Why they would do such a seemingly perverse thing beats the crap outta me and doesn't seem to help anyone. I'm currently looking into seeing if there is a way to avoid this setback next year.
Also, caution to anyone out there using an older phone - when you click on "Timed Events" it can load several hundred events which might overwhelm your device. On my SGS2 and SGT7+ it delays for only a second or two; YMMV.
One last thing -- to Mark, from last year: the update I published ONLY added camps. I didn't touch the map whatsoever - it was working the whole time. Please make sure you have a gps lock before assuming the app is broken (your gps icon should go from blinking to solid, and that might take several minutes), especially before posting a 1 star review as the first and only review, because that may well have needlessly prevented hundreds of others from downloading the app due to that false pretense. I definitely appreciate you updating your review, though, at least. Thanks for that.
Cheers, everyone. Happy burn 2012!
