    Line Of Defense Tactics's review

A real time tactical game set in outer space

    8.5
    • Thrilling gameplay
    • Array of orders and squad options
    • True 3D
    • Needs a high-end device and the largest screen you can get
    • Any truly unique feature would have been great

"At my signal, everybody move three tiles forward and cover"

LoD Tactics is, as its name implies, a tactical game. A tactical game played in real time but played on a gridded board anyway, though you don't actually see the tiles. It's set in a WH40K-like scenario, where space mareens fight off bad guys by land or air in gloomy claustrophobic indoors and the emptiness of outer space while an inter-galactic conspiracy is being unfolded.

Hands down, this game is impressive. Graphics, animations and technical performance is smooth and makes gameplay livelier. 3D is really 3D and you can (and often must) rotate the camera and zoom in and out. Controls are tricky, and need some induction procedure, so to speak, in order to make the appropriate choices and plans come together as they should. Game's paused when you are giving orders.

On the other hand, outside combat, squad management options aren't as many or as cool as you would like, and we would have loved a local multiplayer option, or a level editor or whatever of those options that make the difference between a great game and a Great Game. More mobile native options, making use of swipes and tilts, would had also enhanced UX.

Anyway, you can enjoy the first three stages for free before in-app purchasing the whole game, and there isn't any reason on Earth (or abroad) to not giving it a go. Highly recommendable.
