Jump and dodge madcap obstacles whilst collecting prized ruby gems

    • Berserk, harmless fun
    • Extremely addictive
    • Gets more difficult as you play
    • Burns out quickly

"Lasers and rockets and mines, oh my"

Mankind has risen from the slime over millennia, battling disease, bears, and general hardship in order to reach the pinnacle of what we call civilization. It's here we find neurosurgery, Hot Pockets, and Everplay Interactive's 1001 Attempts, in which you are a pixelly gooball avoiding laser beams. Hoorah!

No, but really. Aim the gooball and jump between the top and bottom of the screen, attempting to snag the ruby gems along the way without smacking into a rogue hazard. The further you progress, the more devious the hazards become, including criss-crossing laser quilts and merciless heat-seeking missiles. The pacing is set at frantic, and ever-increasing. Chirpy beats goad you into the perception of a genuinely engaging challenge.

Addiction is nearly inevitable. Three slips and the round is over, but you'll be informed exactly how many more gems must be collected before gaining access to....... another gooball sprite. What magic powers might it possess? Hint: none. But it's a different color, so!

My sarcasm faucet might be leaking this morning, but I actually really enjoyed this game. Well. "Enjoyed." I can't seem to bring myself to uninstall it. Watching the screen fill up entirely with things determined to kill my gooball is somehow masochistically gleeful, and just stupid enough that it's ideal to fill up two minutes while I wait for the metro.

So what if it doesn't quite reach the heights of Hot Pockets? Everplay Interactive's 1001 Attempts is still berserk, harmless fun.

Responds well on NVidia Shield with controller mappings, with disabled on-screen control visibility (you should play with a controller since the OSD buttons get in the way). Games like this need to be ported to consoles or Steam, and perhaps multiplayer as an idea for you developers.

1001 Attempts is the perfect example of what an arcade game should be. It's fast paced, addicting, and extremely simple to learn how to play yet it offers a challenge for those who wish to master it. The music is great, the pixel art style is superb, and the gameplay relentless. Once you start playing you won't want to stop! TECHNICAL REVIEW: Overall, the game is nearly perfect. It may that the errors I'm about to report are due to the developer not updating the app as newer hardware devices and versions of Android are released. Notably, on my device and the most recent of Android releases some of the text extends beyond view. Also (and it's not really a problem for users) the ads no longer display but the option to remove them remains. I'll end the review with a recommendation. It'd be nice if the controls could be adjusted in size so that they didn't take as much space up of the tablet screen. And, I haven't tested it yet, but controller support would be awesome.
