As of 2014, it seems quite foolish to develop and launch a chess game. Not a so-called chess sequel, nor an alternative chess board with a million-dollar franchise backing it, but a simple, standard chess game.
In fact, I can imagine Ripstone's staff brainstorming about what to do next. Someone said "chess," and people ought to have made jokes about "Why not parcheesi, too?" and the like. However, he then added "the best chess game on the market," and that's just what they did.
Pure Chess does not bring new and alternative rules to the table, nor flashy bizarre options. As its title implies, it's just chess, having gathered all the options that players have been asking for since the first online chess games appeared. It's like setting a new standard.
If you are missing the old Battlechess, no worries: there are plenty of beautifully designed boards and piece sets (not animated, though, don't expect a queen casting a spell on a pawn). Wanna play random opponents online or IRL friends offline? Sure. Prefer to solve chess problems? Here they are. Challenge the AI and feel like Karpov? Go ahead.
More fancy features: four beautiful background soundtracks, some stages, 3D cameras, ELO rankings. Throughout this review, I only missed a "give up" button and the chance to change notations from algebraic to descriptive. You can offer a draw anytime, though. Graphics are gorgeous and beautifully rendered. Learning to play includes a step by step tutorial suited for players who haven't ever played a chess game.
Long story short, this game provides anything you could ask for in a chess game. The initial free download includes the most basic checkers-like pieces, but you can tailor your features in the in-app shop or purchase the whole bundle for $10.
Absolutely recommended. Now that we have the closest thing to a perfect mobile chess game, it's time to ask for alternate rules and fantasy boards. But not before.
