Pokélike monster collection game with heavy focus on battling

    • Heavy focus on battling will be to some users' taste
    • Training takes effect immediately
    • Heaps of monsters to collect
    • Great social aspects
    • Mostly balanced free-to-play game mechanics
    • Wifi connection required
    • Collection cards seem to fail too frequently
    • Little adventure aspect

    "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Monsters"

It's okay to miss Pokémon, and it's understandable to mourn that Nintendo steadfastly refuses to bring everyone's favorite pocket monsters to mobile. In the meanwhile, collect-and-train games like Haypi Monster fill the masterball-shaped hole in our hearts. This one's heavily focused on battle at the expense of adventuring, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Send your bignosed avatar out into the floating worlds, rolling a die to move across the tiles and towards the "boss" creature of each. Every tile presents a new challenger for your team of beasties, which you can either defeat for XP or attempt to capture for your collection via cards. Once you've taken down the final critter, head back to headquarters for tons of ways to upgrade your team.

"Synthesize" two monsters into a chimera creature only available through fusion. Instantly level up low-level monsters in the training zone; they'll be available for further battling immediately - no pesky waiting period wherein they're off pumping iron. Enter the arena for multiplayer challenges, both ladder-tourney style and versus raging bosses.

The visual and audio design is solid here, and the free-to-play mechanics mostly feel balanced. One complaint: the "47% success" cards used to capture monsters appear to fail far more than that - but monetization's gotta kick in somewhere along the line, I guess. The heavy emphasis on battling at the expense of an unfolding storyline won't be to everyone's taste, but will strongly appeal to those just interested in a pure monster training/fighting experience.

Note that a wifi connection is required to play the game.

Haypi Monsters isn't a Poké-replacement, but it's an excellent riff on the monster-collection genre, and definitely addictive should you have a penchant for leveling up colorful little varmints.
