"Save the felines from becoming kitty flambé"

Totally original, extraordinarily well-done, and absolutely addictive: Glass Bottom Games' Jones On Fire is a stunner of a side-scroller.

Play as Emma Jones, blocky retro firefighter extraordinaire. You love cats and hate fire, so save the former whilst evading the latter. The mountainous region just outside is plagued by burning bits of everything, including sweeping walls of fire that will toast you and the kitties, tails and all. Jump and dash your way around the obstacles to tally up how many fluffy lives you've saved on the board, netting you upgrades, bonuses, and perhaps someday a coveted spot on the leaderboards.

The game design is top-notch and wholly original. Blocky graphcis are semi-reminiscent of Minecraft, and the chip tune chirping away in the background adds just the right amount of cheerful urgency.

When the red wall of flame appears behind you, it's actually genuinely freaky. It may be a game about fire and cats, but you'll find yourself invested in their welfare to the effect of racing heartbeat and sweaty palms. The in-game text prompts are rife with witty tongue-in-cheek humor as well.

The developers compare Jones On Fire to Temple Run, Line Runner, Canabalt, and Robot Unicorn Attack. Personally, I like it much better than any of those, and I'm allergic to cats. Ripe for an immediate download.

Some rough edges here and there, but its a fun game with solid mechanics and low key art direction.
