Latest title in Layton mystery series plays like a Phoenix Wright case - a good thing

    • More mystery, less petty puzzling
    • Excellent soundtrack
    • Attractive 2D and 3D graphics
    • Fantastic dialogue including regional accents
    • Too much hand-holding makes game too easy

    "Less Layton, more Objection!"

Michael Bluth knows the childlike glee of solving a juicy homicidal mystery just as much as the rest of us. Level-5 Inc.'s Layton Brothers Mystery Room brings clue-seeking and logical deduction to your mobile device in a style much more reminiscent of Ace Attorney than previous Professor Layton titles - and that's wholly positive.

Play as the combined sleuthing team of Lucy Baker, an eager new detective in Scotland Yard, and Alfendi Layton, son of the famous namesake Professor. Work your way through cases by interrogating suspects, investigating 3D crime scenes, and rifling through case files. You'll need a sharp eye to catch all the clues, especially in later levels when the game stops pointing out their potential location, plus powers of logical deduction in order to connect the dots and catch the culprit.

There aren't any of the traditional math and spacial puzzles that typify the rest of the Layton series here - the app's storyline heavy, rich with dialogue reflective of each character's respective regional accent. The backing soundtrack is beautifully detailed, too, jazzy riffs that add greatly to the experience of breaking down the guilty party's resolve with your flawless logical prowess. The graphics are also high-caliber, the stylized cartoon character drawings as much as the 3D crime scenes.

The one complaint I have is the excessive hand-holding. There's no failure mechanism; unlike Ace Attorney, you can answer incorrectly as many times as you please without consequence. Adding in pressure to think before you tap would give the game some welcome teeth. This does mean, however, that the app is well-suited to smaller gamers as well.

Level-5 Inc.'s Layton Brothers Mystery Room offers the first two cases for free; the other stories are available through in-app purchase.
