You're no Jet Li, and yet pushing foes off a sky-high pillar to an untimely demise is... satisfying. Don't be fooled by the humble pixel graphics of Ernest Szoka's Only One; they take on addictive life as you wield your magic sword against wave after wave of enemies.
You'll start off with classic slimes, of course. Then come swordsmen, archers, mages - you'll find each wave is more devious than the last. Slash enough baddies and you'll level up, netting yourself an option of new abilities in the process. Will you freeze your attackers, permitting rampant hacks with your blade? Or will you simply push them off the edge, letting gravity do your dirty work? Intermittent boss battles keep you on your toes.
The graphics are retro-pixels, sure - but they're really well done within that aesthetic, and the sound design is actually quite rich. Controls are via on-screen buttons, including a floating joystick (which can be switched to fixed in settings). The shortcomings of a touchscreen do show through here; it would be much more accurate to play with a physical controller.
Ernest Szoka's Only One is addictive, well-made, and damn neat; you'll find yourself playing just one more round just to find out what the next wave of baddies looks like.
