If you haven't been living in a dark, dank cave for the past couple years, you know about Tinder. Perhaps you've even used it a time or two - what do you have to lose? Oh, you say you have swiping blisters on your thumb? You'll get no sympathy from me, bub. Quick-pic hookups require sacrifice, my friend. Ingenious card-swiping UI that turns dating into an impulsive, addictive yes-no game. Tinder's creeping its way across the entire globe, so you may as well check out who's in your area just in case a hottie is awaiting in the stack.
Couldn't be easier to use. The design encourages not only frequent browsing in hopes of a match, but also quick connections via mutual matches on chat geared towards meeting up in person. Be part of the zeitgeist.
Potentially reduces complex, fascinating people to a handful of duckface photos accompanied by a sentence or two. If you live somewhere more rural, you'll have a much smaller pool to check out.
Original review from Oct 08, 2013:
Filling out online dating profiles is hard, and meeting people in real life is even harder. The dating world's been waiting for an app like Tinder, which boils the whole sordid process of attraction down to its bare essentials.
Scroll through photos of other users, and use your snap judgement to decide whether you like them or not. It's possible to see a handful of further photos if they've chosen to provide them, the user's age, and a very brief profile (usually no more than a sentence). Swipe them to the left and they're rejected forever; swipe them to the right and they go on your accepted list. If they right-swipe your image as well, the app will inform you of the connection and enable in-app messaging between the two of you.
Tinder's no-nonsense approach to attraction neatly solves a few pressing problems in the online dating world. In the end, no matter how eloquent of a profile you write, people who message you tend to do so because they're attracted to your photos - so why not simplify the process to its one crucial element? It also ensures that you're never wasting your time being contacted by folks you're uninterested in yourself. You'll have to link Tinder to your Facebook account, but the app is discreet about the association. It will never post anything to your feed, and it uses the information you have listed regarding your friends and interests to show you the most relevant profiles.
One major potential drawback of Tinder has to do with location. If you live in a major metropolitan area in the US or Europe, the app may already be popular enough that you have an interesting pool to draw from. If not, however, you'll burn through your possible matches like wildfire, and the app becomes a bit useless. The messaging system is also on the slow and buggy side, but it's pretty easy to just take the next step and exchange numbers with matches you enjoy.
Give Tinder a go if you're looking to get connected with new people in a streamlined, efficient way. It can't hurt, and you just never know who you might meet.
