Visually stunning adventure through the history of typography

    • Richly splendid graphic and audio design
    • Educational without being pushy
    • Totally original
    • Gameplay not super difficult

    "Final Fontesy"

Every so often comes along a game that blows you out of the water with flawless execution of a truly original idea. Bulkypix's Type:Rider combines an aesthetic feast - we're talking dynamic music and backgrounds that would be right at home in museums, folks - with actual hardcore educational information about typography. For those seeking something different, it doesn't get much better than this.

Travel as two dots - an umlaut, mayhaps? - in a world silhouetted against richly detailed historical tapestries. Surfaces are composed of an amalgamation of stray oversize letters in the typeface of that world's theme (Gothic, Garamond, Times New Roman, even everyone's favorite Comic Sans...), abstract forms, and dynamic puzzles involving everything from pebbles to printing presses. Collect every character from the world's typeface to ace it, plus gather pages of information to form an encyclopedic guide to the history of fonts.

It's educational, but it doesn't throw anything in your face. It's a game, but it's a simple and beautifully zen experience, totally lacking in the pointless frustration so common in m-games these days. And the graphics: if you can play this on a tablet, you must. The depth and detail merits as big a screen as you can wrangle.

Perhaps the only negative is that gameplay isn't ultra challenging. The controls are built to be maximally intuitive, and you're meant to jump and bump through the levels in an experiential way, as opposed to presenting a true "gaming" interaction. This is okay! Just know what you're getting into, and let it take your breath away.

You certainly don't have to be obsessed with typography to adore Bulkypix's Type:Rider - but if you are, brace yourself for an onslaught of bliss.
